CARDIOVASCULAR REGULATION

The primary focus of my graduate work was investigating the underlying physiological processes associated with the Valsalva maneuver, or forced expiration against a closed airway while maintaining an open glottis. I have a general interest in cardiovascular regulatory pathways including the baroreflex, Bainbridge reflex, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, etc. I have published work on model development, dynamical systems analysis, and global sensitivity analysis in this subject area. This is an active area of research in collaboration with Mette Olufsen, Ph.D at NCSU as we use mathematical modeling to analyze patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and dysautonomia.
